A Moving Moment when Liam Rosenior Shatters Boundaries

"He is a quality tactician that knows the game inside out, and that's what matters most.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black footballer, I would be lying to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

These were the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who earned his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

This week, Chelsea named RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their new head coach following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also controls the London club.

Statistics show only 12 black head coaches – not including individuals in temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since its inception 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands the local fans," continued Canoville.

"Whenever kids observe a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, a person they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that fights for equality… it is powerful demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for the club, for the capital, for all aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Does the Data Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the top flight's first black head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current top flight gaffer of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout English football is matched by a lack of representation in the boardroom.

As per the BFP 2023's report, forty-three percent of Premier League players come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, analysis by the equality organization found just 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching level, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the percentage is two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of ability that exists in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire a chance to show what they can do. We need to continue to work hard to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior will become one of only four full-time British head coaches currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind the continent's other big five divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight coaches in Italy are from Italy, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure every young English coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly inspirational to up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness someone get that job with that profile and we hope he will be highly successful."

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for his services in combating discrimination within the sport and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He started penning articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not determine ability and said opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity results in misunderstandings regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he understood the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In further Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed coach make a discriminatory remark. He pledged support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and authored a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal at Chelsea.

Chelsea boasted the top flight's pioneering black boss with Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
