Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins First Title in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hardcourt
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev won his maiden title for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.
The athlete, a former world number one, has experienced a torrid year, managing just one match at the big events and experiencing a setback at the US Open.
His inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serving in especial - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently working with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has consistently improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a closely contested three-set win over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's maiden title since the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt from March of 2023.
The win also signifies he has won 21 titles at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a event with my two daughters simultaneously, so to secure a title is particularly special," stated ranked player the champion.
"This victory is in dedication of my younger daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child my daughter was born was for her."
Medvedev, the former major winner, had lost his past six title deciders, featuring in Halle previously this season.
The player's counter-punching play style and regular outbursts on court had prompted commentators to doubt if his ability to compete at the top level was over.
Yet the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, striving to approach the net and perform assertively, supported by an enhanced service.
The champion came back from a deficit in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, taking four of the last five games to take the lead.
The pair traded break points in the following set before Moutet, striving for his maiden professional championship, gained dominance to push for a final set.
The opponent saved four early-game chances in a close final set before the champion won the break to 15 to close out the victory.
Fittingly, the winner clinched the win with a shot at the net, with Moutet incapable to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
