On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his term.

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.
